Now Live: Our Aboriginal Employment Plan 2025-2028

The West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) is excited to announce our 2025-2028 Aboriginal Employment Plan is now available online. Aimed at increasing our Aboriginal workforce, this plan lays the foundation for a stronger, more connected workforce where Aboriginal identity is recognised, valued, and nurtured.

Developed in partnership with our Kurnai Nation community members, local Elders and WGHG Aboriginal employees, the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation and the Latrobe City Council, WGHG is committed to culturally informed recruitment, career development and leadership pathways aimed at not only increasing our workforce but also empowering our people each step of the way.

The plan sets measurable employment targets, with WGHG aiming to increase Aboriginal workforce representation from 10 employees in 2025 to 22 employees by 2028. Key initiatives include expanding traineeships and entry-level pathways, strengthening career development and leadership opportunities, establishing an Aboriginal Employee Network, enhancing cultural safety training and increasing community engagement through programs such as Aboriginal Health Yarns.

As part of delivering the plan, WGHG will continue listening to community voices through yarning sessions, community events and engagement with Elders and community representatives. WGHG will also work with local partners to ensure recruitment practices, employment pathways and workplace supports are culturally safe and responsive.

The WGHG Aboriginal Employment Plan 2025–2028 represents more than a strategic framework, it is a reflection of our shared responsibility to build an inclusive and culturally safe health service that supports the aspirations of Aboriginal peoples.

Chief Executive Officer, Shannon Wight highlighted WGHG’s strong commitment to continual growth and development.

“WGHG is committed to demonstrating our strong commitment to the development and growth of an innovative and talented Aboriginal Workforce.  WGHG will deliver on meaningful attraction, recruitment, on-boarding, development and recruitment strategies in partnership with our staff and Aboriginal Community” she said.
