Junior doctors hit the wards at West Gippsland Hospital

West Gippsland Healthcare Group has welcomed its newest doctors with eleven interns starting their placements at the hospital this week.

The first–year doctors have immersed themselves into the day-to-day life of caring for patients and working alongside medical and healthcare staff to build their experience, confidence and expertise.

West Gippsland Healthcare Group Acting Chief Executive Office Trish O’Kelly welcomed the new interns.

“This program is all about education, support and practical learning in our healthcare environment,” she said.

“For many of these interns, they have studied under extremely challenging circumstances, having completed their clinical training years during the pandemic.

“We are proud to provide quality training for all our new doctors here at West Gippsland Healthcare Group.

“They will undertake a 10-week rotation in either emergency medicine, general medicine or surgery at West Gippsland Hospital to build their skills and experience during their time here.

“While these interns are in Warragul, we encourage them to explore the local region and see and experience what the area offers. We hope that many of them will continue their medical careers in Gippsland.”

The placement is part of their full year at their base hospitals which include Peninsula Health, Monash Health and Latrobe Regional Hospital.
