Connecting, to care at every stage of life: West Gippsland Healthcare Group launches new Strategic Plan

Forming meaningful connections is the cornerstone of West Gippsland Healthcare Group’s (WGHG) new Strategic Plan, which will guide the organisation through to 2028.

Launched at WGHG’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, 4 December, the Strategic Plan 2025-28 sets the organisation’s purpose, promise, ambitions and values.

The plan’s development was a collaborative effort with staff, community and partners invited to discuss what was most important to them and the organisation.

WGHG’s refreshed purpose is Connecting, to care at every stage of life, a statement that sets the foundation for decision-making.

WGHG’s promise, Connected quality care, encapsulates the organisation’s mission and commitment to staff, patients, residents, community and partners.

Four strategic pillars and ambition statements will guide the organisation closer to its purpose:

  • Thriving people: A diverse and inclusive health service where people continuously learn and evolve with new ways of working, and our culture enables people to be their best.
  • Excellent care: A responsive, trusted and engaged service that provides the best possible experience, and high-quality care to our community.
  • Meaningful partnerships: Strong and meaningful partnerships that optimise the health and wellbeing of our people, our patients, our residents and our community.
  • Healthy future: Amodern and sustainable health service that provides efficient, effective, and future-ready care.

Refreshed Values in Action connect the organisation’s beliefs to behaviours:

  • We are leaders for today – We embrace positive change to shape our future. We grow future leaders through learning and education. We learn from today for a better tomorrow. We are responsible for social, financial and environmental sustainability.
  • We put people first – We care for everyone’s wellbeing and focus on keeping each other safe. We embrace differences and create an equitable and welcoming environment. We provide care with integrity, compassion and respect. We are accountable for our actions.
  • We are better when we connect – We work together to provide better care. We build connection through listening and responding with kindness. We partner with people in their care. We strengthen care and our community by partnering beyond our walls.
  • We improve every day – We pursue excellence through continuous improvement. We use the best evidence to provide quality care and services. We continuously improve our standard of care by translating research into innovative practice. We minimise waste.

The full Strategic Plan 2025-28 is now available on WGHG’s website, along with the Annual Report 2024-25, which was also presented at the Annual Meeting.

“Our future relies on us working together and this – these meaningful partnerships – are the cornerstone of the Strategic Plan that will lead us through to 2028,” WGHG CEO Shannon Wight said.

“After thorough consultation with the community, our patients, residents and consumers, and our staff, Board members and partners, we have refreshed our purpose, promise and values so that we can thrive.

“By capturing our collective hopes for the future, we have been able to clarify our goals and provide direction. Our plans are ambitious but they are achievable, and I look forward to seeing how we evolve and move with the changing healthcare system over the next few years.”
