The annual Christmas Shop brought cheer to vulnerable families once again, opening for three days to provide presents for 180 children.
The event was made possible by the Andrews Foundation, a Trust Fund set up by the late Ron Andrews to support communities across Victoria’s south-east. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Foundation provided a $15,000 grant to West Gippsland Healthcare Group’s Allied and Community Health department, ensuring vulnerable children receive presents and their parents, the opportunity to choose their children’s gifts.
WGHG partnered with Warragul Toyworld, Priceline and K-Mart to bring together this year’s Christmas Shop. Referred families were invited to choose two gifts per child.
Andrews Foundation trustees Duncan Smith, Alice Andrews and Tessa Hoogerbrugge visited the shop on opening day, a special event for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Tessa says: “It’s so nice to see the Christmas Shop in action and see that a place like this uses the funds well. The service is very much needed and used.”
WGHG Acting Director of Allied and Community Health, Sally Wilson, says: “Christmas is a difficult time for many people, particularly in this economic climate. Every year we’re seeing more families in need. Thanks to the Andrews Foundation, we’re able to support them by providing a gift and, hopefully, moments of joy on Christmas morning.”
The Christmas Shop is now in its sixth year. In the years beforehand, the Andrews Foundation funded a Family Fun Day and luncheon before switching to the Christmas Shop to better suit community needs.
