For information: Future redevelopment

In preparation for proposed future redevelopment of the West Gippsland Hospital site, in late 2023 external specialists were engaged to undertake an assessment to identify and evaluate the presence and extent of hazardous building materials, including asbestos.

Subsequently, this assessment was reviewed by independent medical specialists.

The key outcomes from these assessments and consequential works are that:

  • Asbestos containing materials, which had not previously been detected, were detected at certain locations at the site.

  • All necessary remediation works to address these materials have been undertaken.

  • Air monitoring conducted prior to this remediation work showed an undetectable airborne concentration of asbestos fibres.

  • Normal occupation of areas where friable asbestos fibres were detected poses a low risk of exposure to those fibres.

  • Routine occupancy of areas where friable asbestos was detected, including when work was performed on equipment in those areas, is associated with minimal if any risk of exposure.

  • The total or cumulative level of exposure to respirable asbestos fibres experienced by people at the site is likely to be low.

No monitoring or medical action is required in relation to these matters.

Further independent specialist assessments will be undertaken prior to any redevelopment works.
